Tate, London / Stanhope Alexander Forbes1857-1947 ) Painter of realistic genre, frequently in the open air, historical subjects and landscapes. Born 18 November 1857 in Dublin, son of a railway manager and a French mother. Studied at Lambeth School of Art, the RA Schools 1874-1878 and for two years in Paris under Bonnat. Influenced by Bastien-Lepage and painted in Brittany with La Thangue 1880. Settled in Cornwall 1884 and became a leading member of the ' Newlyn School '.










Foundation member of the NEAC 1886. Began exhibiting at the RA 1878, ARA 1892, RA 1910. Married Elizabeth Armstrong, painter, 1889, and founded with her the Newlyn School of Art 1899. Painted two historical scenes for the Royal Exchange 1897 and 1921 Visited Brittany 1891, Holland 1894, the Pyreneees 1898. Died at Newlyn March 2, 1947. © Tate, London

























FORBES, Stanhope Alexander - Painter, born on 18 November 1857 in Dublin. He studied in the Royal Academy School and in the years 1878-9 at Léon Bonnat in Paris. He exhibited in the Royal Academy in 1878. In 1894 he visited Newlyn in Cornwall for the first time, which from 1899 became his permanent residence. In 1889 he married Elizabeth Adela Armstrong, his fellow student in Newlyn and a good painter. Among his paintings that appear in many public galleries in England and in the colonies we remember: Brindisi to his girlfriend ( 1889; London, Tate Gallery ), Il faro ( Manchester Museum ), Fishing Boat ( 1885; Liverpool Museum)and an important fresco of the great fire of London in 1666, which forms the decoration of the stock exchange in London, profoundly influenced by the school of French Plein air painters and especially by the Bastien-Lepage, became one of the most significant exponents of this manner in England. by Arthur Popham © Treccani, Italian Encyclopedia
